What type of relaxation technique would you suggest for stress?

What is the best ‘guided meditation’ cd out there?

In meditation classes, I’ve had instructors ‘guide’ us by saying things like ‘imagine a warm glow around your feet..slowly moving up your calves..’ etc..are there any cd’s like that?

I have used "Insight Meditation" Which I have found to be helpful, it consists of a cd set and guidebook. The cds walk you through different types of meditation. I reference a link to the set on eBay…and the course was put together by Sharon Salzberg and Joseph Goldstein.

Relaxation Therapy

0 Relaxation TherapyI want to spend the next several minutes just talking to you. The objective here is that you might become as comfortable and relaxed as possible. This is not hypnosis, it is not brain washing, I am simply going to instruct you in how properly to allow yourself to relax.

Relaxation is not simply important for your physical self, it will positively affect your spirit, your mind, your body and your overall well being.

Those unable to relax, often suffer from an inability to focus their concentration. This exercise will allow you to do this.
To be effective, this exercise will require you to have no direct distractions. Nothing that will divide your attention in any fashion, you will want to find a chair or couch that is comfortable. Turn off the television or radio, turn down the lights and relax. This is not a ‘screamer’ – it is an actual relaxation exercise….

Many People experience tension and anxiety that can be cripaling and debilitating. If you have ever experienced these feelings, even for a brief moment you know the effects can be dramatic and lasting.  

Jenifer Acosta Scott writes in an article that there may be help in meditation.
Jenifer offers:

“What creates anxiety are usually the underlying emotions that have been suppressed or ignored in the past,” explains Sarah Maria, a certified meditation instructor with the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, Calif. “When you practice meditation, it creates space, essentially, so any emotions that have been pushed away can come to the surface and be released.”

Meditation has long been touted as a way to self calm and achieve inner peace, so it’s not surprising that it can help relieve anxiety problems.

Here are a few practices Miss Scott says are helpful. 

All meditation practices aren’t created equal, though. If you’d like to start meditating as part of treating an anxiety disorder, first learn about the different approaches to find the one best suited for you.

  • Mindfulness meditation. This type of meditation, which has its roots in Buddhism, concentrates on getting you more in touch with your thoughts and feelings so you can truly live in the moment.
  • Mantra-based meditation. This form of meditation was popularized in the 1960s by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who famously taught his techniques to the Beatles. It involves the use of a mantra, a phrase or word that is repeated in the mind over and over again.
  • Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. While not purely a form of meditation, this blend of cognitive therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is usually done in groups, has been shown to ease anxiety.
  • Zen meditation. Also known as zazen meditation, this form of meditation integrates breathing, posture, and even visualization to increase self-awareness and release troublesome thoughts.

If being in a group meditation is not for you I highly recommend grabbing a meditation CD or other form of media to use at home or at work. I can tell you first hand that after a tough day at work or with he kids meditation can be just the relief that is needed.
